FIA Confirms All Formula 1 Teams Will Comply with Front Wing Rules

Formula One’s Governing Body Responds to Concerns

Formula One’s governing body, the FIA, has responded to concerns about McLaren and Mercedes’ front wings bending and said on Tuesday that all teams were complying with the regulations.

Background to the Concerns

Ferrari and Red Bull team principals raised questions, without formal objection, after Sunday’s Italian Grand Prix, which Ferrari won with a bold tyre strategy after McLaren took the pole position in qualifying.

“The front wings of McLaren and Mercedes need to be analysed,” said Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko after drivers’ championship leader Max Verstappen finished sixth.

Team principal Christian Horner said at the time that the wording of the regulations needed to be rethought, even if all the front wings passed inspection.

FIA’s Response

The FIA’s technical department said in a statement that it had carried out checks on the front wing at every race.

“All front wings are currently compliant with the 2024 regulations,” the FIA said.

The FIA added that it had collected more data since the Belgian Grand Prix in July by using on-board video cameras in Friday’s free practice to assess the movement of the front wing by targeting areas not visible to the official Formula 1 cameras.

“This process will continue until at least Singapore to ensure that every team has activated the mandatory FIA camera at all types of tracks,” the FIA continued.

“This will ensure a large database that will allow the FIA to draw an objective picture of the situation and measure the differences between the different dynamic patterns observed on the track.”

Next Steps

The Singapore race is the 18th of the 24 races in the World Championship, and takes place on September 22 and follows the Azerbaijan race on September 15.

The FIA’s continued collection of data and analysis of the front wing movement will provide a clear picture of the situation and help to ensure a fair and competitive racing environment.
